🇨🇿 Czechia Ageing, Long-Term Care & Community Support Knowledge Hub

Czechia is undergoing significant demographic and social change as population ageing, changing family structures, workforce pressures and differences in access between regions increase the importance of sustainable long-term care and community support. Its care system brings together national government, regional and municipal authorities, healthcare services, social services, public and non-governmental providers, private organisations, families and communities. The first collection within this Knowledge Hub explores Czechia Ageing, Long-Term Care & Community Support, with additional specialist collections being introduced as the library expands.

Czechia’s long-term care system reflects its own demographic, economic, geographic and institutional context, including the interaction between healthcare and social services and the continuing importance of family care. Many of the pressures it faces are also shared internationally. These include enabling older people to remain at home, supporting family carers, expanding community-based alternatives to institutional provision, addressing workforce shortages, strengthening coordination between health and social care, reducing geographic inequalities, improving quality and accountability, and making effective use of digital and assistive technologies. Czechia therefore provides valuable learning for providers, municipalities, regional authorities, policymakers, researchers and system leaders internationally.

This Knowledge Hub examines Czechia’s approach to population ageing, long-term care financing, care allowances, regional and municipal responsibilities, home and community support, residential care, deinstitutionalisation, informal caregiving, dementia, disability, independent living, palliative care, complex needs, workforce development, migration, quality assurance, safeguarding, person-centred care, continuity of care, prevention, healthy ageing, digitalisation, assistive technology, data, housing, geographic inequalities and system reform. It forms part of the interconnected international knowledge library across Impact Guru and Impact Insights Hub, supporting comparison between different care systems without assuming that one national model can simply be transferred to another.

As the collection develops, articles will explore how national policy, regional and municipal responsibilities, healthcare and social services, providers, families, communities, technology, evidence and European policy influences interact. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between health and social care, the balance between formal and family support, the sustainability of long-term care financing, workforce recruitment and retention, deinstitutionalisation and community-based support, rural and regional access, ageing at home, hospital-to-community transitions, dementia support, prevention, digital care and the future organisation of services. The aim is to create a practical, evidence-informed resource for understanding both Czechia’s evolving care system and the wider lessons emerging from its experience.
