Training Governance in Adult Social Care: How to Run a Live Training Matrix That Stands Up to Scrutiny

A training matrix is often treated like an admin tracker: who has completed what and when. In reality, it should function as a live governance control that helps you run a safe service, allocate staff appropriately, and identify risk early. Training only works if it is role-specific, current, and reinforced in practice, and that starts with how you recruit and then develop people over time. Why a “live” training matrix matters

  • No allocation rules: if expired competence does not change rostering decisions, the matrix is not controlling risk.
  • Too many items: prioritise what matters for your service risks, and ensure you can maintain it.
