In domiciliary care, spot checks are one of the few ways to evidence what practice looks like in real time, in people’s homes. When designed properly, they sit at the heart of supervision, spot checks and quality assurance and provide defensible assurance that your service models and care pathways are being delivered consistently across the workforce.
This article explains how to design a risk-based spot check programme that focuses resource where risk is highest, creates measurable improvement, and stands up to commissioner scrutiny and CQC inspection.
Why “random” spot checks often fail
Many providers start with good intentions but end up with a programme that is difficult to defend because it:
- prioritises convenience over risk
- focuses on whether staff “arrived on time” rather than whether practice is safe
- produces inconsistent records that cannot be aggregated
